The Grammys are considering adding an Afrobeats category
This week the Grammy Awards have announced a slew of new genre categories, including the Afrobeats category. The Grammy website has revealed a slew of new categories like Best Traditional R&B performance, Best Contemporary R&B Performance, and Best R&B Song Video.
Also included in this week’s mix-up is the Afrobeats category and a possible category for the category is The Album of the Year. The Afrobeats category includes artists like Fefe Dobson, Kelela, Keb’ Mo, and more.
The Recording Academy will be discussing the issues of this category. There is an opportunity to discuss this at the February 28th Board meeting.
The Afrobeats category has been proposed by Grammy executive Bob Rock.
“I would describe Afrobeats as a new genre, but I think there are similarities to other genres,” said Rock. “When artists come out with a new style of music I’d like to see it placed in the category.”
Grammy producers have already expressed their opinion on the Afrobeats category. Fefe Dobson, Pharrell Williams, Pharrell Williams, and Kanye West have all expressed their support for the format.
An Afrobeats category would also help the Grammy Awards be more inclusive and give more recognition and support to emerging artists.
It’s unclear if the Grammy voters will vote on an Afrobeats category or how the voting would work.
We will update you if any further details are released.
