Emma Raducanu and Naomi Osaka both lose in US Open first round

The latest US Open results on the women’s singles and doubles competitions are in, and you have to say, both of them had quite a tough first-round.

Raducanu, ranked 42nd in the world, had a mixed run at the tournament, losing in the first round to Lucie Safarova in three sets. Osaka, ranked 44th, has never made it past the quarter-finals at the US Open.

But after losing in two sets to her fellow Australian Alex Kuznetsov, Osaka will be looking ahead to the French Open, where she beat Kuznetsov in the third round.

A pretty bad first round in New York

Raducanu had a mixed run at the Open, losing to Safarova in three sets in the first round. The Romanian reached the fourth round, but then fell to American Elena Vesnina in three sets, and Kuznetsov. Vesnina beat Raducanu in the third round.

Kuznetsova suffered a tough first round in New York. She lost to Japanese wild card Jang Yun Suk in three sets. She reached the fourth round, but then lost in five sets to Vesnina in the third round.

Naomi Osaka

Just the latest loss of the year for Japan

Naomi Osaka made it to the quarter-finals in London, but was eliminated in three sets by American Madison Keys. The Japanese star reached the US Open quarter-finals for the first time in her career, but this was her first US Open first-round exit.

Kuznetsov

Rookie Kuznetsov had a mixed run at the US Open. She lost in the first round to American Madison Keys in three sets. The 27-year-old Russian won her first WTA title since the summer after beating Elena Vesnina in the final.
