Top seed Daniil Medvedev beaten by Nick Kyrgios at US Open in straight sets

Daniil Medvedev looked set for defeat at the US Open after he lost the first set to Nick Kyrgios in a match that lasted an hour.

Kyrgios produced a performance to make sure of victory despite a match that was a marathon.

Medvedev, who is ranked third in the world, was beaten by a late break in the third game in a tense opening session that ended at 1-all, after the match was tied at one all.

The 23-year-old needed to win the two hours and 45 minutes to take a 1-0 lead in the second set but that proved to be impossible after Medvedev had an easy service break to go up 3-1.

Medvedev made the most of the momentum and continued to lead 8-2 when a superb forehand cross the baseline was his only contribution to take a 10-2 lead.

In the fourth game, Medvedev, who had spent the entire match in a crouch with his eyes closed, made an error which gave Kyrgios a chance to serve for the match.

Kyrgios’ forehand was the only shot Medvedev could find at net and he took full advantage when he volleyed up the court in the 11th game to take a commanding 12-3 lead.

Medvedev came on a break in the 13th game but Kyrgios broke to take a 15-5 second-set lead.

The first game of the second set was even and Kyrgios was the first serve taker, before Medvedev struck. Medvedev was the first from deep and Kyrgios double-faulted.

Medvedev tried another service break but Kyrgios held on to win the set.

Kyrgios had to save three break points in the third set but he converted two of them to win the match.

Kyrgios will now face Kei Nishikori, also ranked third, who defeated Kei Nishik
