Rafael Nadal overcomes Fabio Fognini in four sets in US Open second round
Nadal thrashed 6-0, 2-6, 0-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the first two sets on Tuesday night to secure the second round tiebreak against third seed Fabio Fognini of Italy.
Fognini saved three match points in the final set against Nadal to force a deciding fifth set. Nadal held on for his first US Open title.
Nadal was the first man to beat the 32-year-old Italian since Roger Federer in the 2005 US Open, winning in five sets.
The other big story before Nadal and Fognini faced off was the absence of four of the top 10 players in the men’s draw.
Andy Murray, who was injured in a car crash in Germany last week, withdrew from his match with world number one Novak Djokovic, prompting an outcry from Murray and fans.
